Seven Questions to Ask Before Hiring a Tax Consultant in Pakistan

Choosing someone to handle your FBR tax returns, SECP company filings, or provincial sales tax compliance is one of the most consequential decisions you make as a professional or business owner in Pakistan. Because the law holds the taxpayer personally responsible for every figure submitted under their CNIC or company NTN, "my consultant did it without telling me" is not a legal defense against a Section 111 unexplained-assets addition or a Section 122 assessment order.

Before you engage any tax advisor, accounting firm, or service desk, ask these seven plain-English questions. Their answers will tell you immediately whether they run a disciplined practice or rely on risky shortcuts.

1. "Will My Own Email and CNIC-Registered Phone Number Stay on My IRIS Profile?"

A legitimate consultant will always answer yes. Even when you hire an advisor to execute the portal work hands-on for you, your FBR IRIS profile must always list your own personal email address and a mobile number registered on your own CNIC. If a preparer insists on putting their office email or mobile number on your Form 181 profile, walk away—that practice locks you out of your own tax identity.

2. "How Do We Coordinate Portal Execution Once My Case Is Opened?"

You should never type raw passwords into an unverified public website form before a case is opened. Once you formally engage a desk—whether through the platform, WhatsApp, or a direct call—a professional practice gives you clear execution choices: direct advisor execution coordinated live with you, formal authorized representation, or a guided session after you approve the working papers.

3. "Will I Receive Complete Working Papers Before Anything Is Filed?"

Filing an annual income tax return (Section 114) and wealth statement (Section 116) is not just typing numbers into web boxes. It requires a structured reconciliation proving that:

Opening Net Wealth + Declared Inflows - Personal & Business Outflows = Closing Net Wealth

Always ask whether you will receive the underlying Excel or PDF working schedule showing how your bank statements, salary certificates, and asset changes were reconciled before final submission.

4. "How Are Government Challans and Official Fees Paid?"

Never hand over a lump sum of cash combining consultancy fees and government taxes without seeing the official PSID (Payment Slip ID). Every FBR, SECP, PRA, SRB, or KPRA payment generates an official computer challan carrying your own CNIC/NTN and name. You should pay official government challans directly from your own bank app via 1Link/ADC so you hold the immediate bank proof and Computerized Payment Receipt (CPR).

5. "What Services Do You Explicitly Refuse to Do?"

An ethical tax practice has clear boundaries. Ask the consultant directly about grey-market requests such as "wealth whitening," "8B adjustment tricks," "fake input invoices," or "7E without password." If they wink and offer to arrange those shortcuts for an extra fee, you know they are willing to expose their clients to FBR blacklisting and audit penalties.

6. "How Will You Handle a Difference in My Net Wealth or Negative Stock?"

Mistakes and gaps happen in real life—people forget to keep an old property deed, lose a bank statement, or miscode an HS tariff line in Annex H. A serious advisor will explain how to trace the real bank records, file a documented revision, or pay the lawful tax due. An irresponsible agent will offer to invent "agricultural income," "cash gifts," or "unregistered purchases."

7. "What Records Will I Have If I Change Consultants Next Year?"

You own your tax history. After every engagement, you should walk away with all working schedules, submitted PDFs, CPR receipts, and correspondence organized in one place. With Corporate Morning Desk, every case has a dedicated reference (DSK-YYYY-NNNN) and a private tracking page where you can download your documents and see a full history of status updates.
